I qualified as a professional interpreter and translator of Arabic [National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, Advanced Diploma] in 2008 after a distinguished academic career of more than twenty years in Arabic and Islamic Studies. Among the positions I held were HH Sheikh of Sharjah Professor of Arabic Studies [University of Exeter, UK], and Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies [University of Melbourne, Australia]. I was the Director of Studies at the Centre for Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, Alexandria University, from 1989-1991. I was also External Examiner for degree programs at various universities in the United Kingdom, including Oxford, Cambridge and the School of Oriental Studies.
I hold a BA and PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies. As part of my professional activities I have been an advisor and expert witness in high profile cases, including the Lockerbie Trial in the Netherlands, and in the County and Supreme Courts in Victoria, Australia.
I began studying Arabic and Islamic Studies in 1979, the year of the Iranian Revolution, which perhaps changed the shape of our world forever. I have lived for several years in Arabic speaking countries, and this has provided me with a much deeper understanding of the cultural, religious, historical, behavioural and social climates of the Arab and Muslim world. Since 2005 I have worked in many different environments, including schools, universities and various government agencies, as well as with individuals from different backgrounds, combining my linguistic skills and knowledge with cultural training, insights and interpretations.
